Course FAQs
Q. What if I have never run before?
Perfect! Then this course is for you. We will take you from being unable to run at all, to running your first 5km this summer.
Q. Who is the course being run by?
The course will be run by qualified instructors from Gade Valley Harriers running club.
Gade Valley Harriers was founded in 1991 and is a club organised by runners, for runners. We have over 100 members of varied running abilities and want to welcome beginner runners into the club with this new course. There’s loads more info about us elsewhere on this website, so take a look and see what we get up to!
Q. Will I be too old, too unfit or too slow ?
No! The course is designed for complete beginners who have an interest in learning to run – as long you have no medical conditions that prevent you from participating in physical exercise.
Q. Do I need running clothing or footwear?
We advise you wear comfortable sportswear and trainers. As part of the course the coaches will make recommendations on specific running clothing and footwear in case you choose to invest.
Q. When and where will the ‘Learn to Run’ course be held?
The sessions will take place on Tuesday nights at 7pm in Hemel Hempstead. We will run to or meet in a variety of locations around the local area.
Q. What will I learn on the course and who will I run with?
We have a maximum of 20 spaces on the course and all participants will be beginners, so we would expect that you will all be able to run together until you find your natural pace.
Each Tuesday session will consist of a warm-up, some fundamental movement skills, a run and a cool down. In addition each week will have a ‘focus’ (e.g. arms) – essentially looking at the various technical elements of running. The run section will progress with increasing time spent running compared to walking and also increasing overall duration.
Q. How much does it cost?
The cost of the course is £50 for the full 10 weeks, which is payable up front. If you choose to join the club, your membership will be free for the rest of the year.
Q. What happens at the end of the course?
Over the 10 weeks we hope you will get to know each other and our club members. We hope you’ll want to carry on running with us & join our main club sessions on a Tuesday and Thursday evening. You will be invited to take part in an organised club run and we will offer support to any of you wanting to have a go at a local Parkrun, which is 5km.
Q. How do I sign up?
We have a maximum of 20 places on the course to ensure you get the most out of your experience. Please email learntorun@gadevalleyharriersco.uk
We will be in contact to let you know if there is a place on the course.
